Motor Vehicle

Due to Coronavirus restrictions and concerns for our customers and employee’s health the following procedures will take affect Wednesday, March 25, 2020.  Woodbury County Treasurers office will no longer be open for public access.

Customers who need to renew their vehicle and pay property taxes can do so through the mail or on the Woodbury County website.

On March 18th, Gov Kim Reynolds issued a State of Public Health Disaster Emergency.  She issued a Proclamation changing the following things within the Treasurer’s office.

Property Taxes:
The deadline of paying property taxes has been extended from March 31st, 2020 to May 27th, 2020 without any extra penalty.

Motor Vehicle:
If your vehicle registration expired Jan 17, 2020 or later, it will be considered valid until the declared disaster has ended.
If you are purchasing or transferring a vehicle, you will not be required to obtain a title & registration within 30 days.  This will    remain in effect until the declared disaster is over.
If you purchase a vehicle from a dealer, you will not be required to obtain license plates within 45 days.  This will remain in effect until the declared disaster is over.

Treasurer’s office regrets having to close the drive-up window, but the traffic congestion and the blocking of the city streets with non-essential traffic cannot be tolerated.  It has caused law enforcement to perform traffic duty when it should not be necessary.

Effective immediately, the drive-up window will be closed until further notice.

Dealers will need to come to the alley door to drop off and pick-up work.

Customers who need to renew their vehicle and pay property taxes can do so through the mail or on the Woodbury County website.

Then click on Treasurer’s dept.

You can call for your pin# or receipt # if you do not have it.  712-279-6500 for Vehicle and 712-279-6495 for Tax.

We also have a drop box next to the drive-up window payments for Vehicle renewal (include your plate#) and Property Tax (include your statement or address) will also be accepted there .  Do not put cash in drop box; personal check, money order or cashier check only.

Thank you in advance for your patience through this difficult time.

Effective January 1, 2020, a bill of sale will be required on all (dealer and private) vehicle transfers.

The Iowa State Treasurer's Association in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Revenue aim to substantiate vehicle purchase prices.

The minimum requirement on the bill of sale will be: year, make, model and VIN. It will also need to be signed by both the buyer and seller with the date of sale and the purchase price.
